Depending on the amount of my dipping sauces, I alternate between the large and the small mortars. No electricity, and a great work out for my arms and shoulders! I use the stone mortar sale for grinding herbs and spices for curry paste. This is my grinder, kneader, mixer, blender, cracker, and much more. In Malay, it is known as lesung. Large stone mortar sales, with long (2–3 feet) wood pestles were used in West Asia to grind meat for a type of meatloaf, or kibbeh, as well as the hummus variety known as masabcha.
